ABSTRACT

ALMOST everyone visiting a foreign country for the first timefinds that no matter how well informed he or she might be priorto the visit, the new country is rather different than anticipated. Likewise, the visitor to a foreign land often finds perceptions of his or her homeland among the native population to be at variance with the "reality" of the visitor's country. What sources of information are important in creating national images and then working to confirm, reject, or modify them?
