ABSTRACT
Near the end of his life, Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and the drafter of the Declaration of Independence, writes the above letter passage to John Holmes, a Senator from Maine. Jefferson laments here the invalidation of sacrifices; sacrifices made by his contemporaries and, seemingly, discarded by later generations who have not themselves bled and died for their privileges.
