ABSTRACT

It need hardly be said that the genuine reactionaries considered any pretensions to scholarship in a woman an indication of an eccentric and wilful nature. To them, all girls must be brought up with marriage in view, and marriage necessitated a training in the wiles of husband-hunting. Accomplishments were essential in a woman, since accomplishments were pleasing to the male; but no husband in his senses would marry a woman with any claims to be his intellectual equal.
