ABSTRACT

MEN, WORK AND EMOTIONAL LIFE Morality can be an important form of disciplining our masculinity when it gets us into thinking and feeling that the moral law-doing what is ‘right’, or even what is ‘expected of us’—is always more important than identifying and living out our own wants and needs. As I have argued, this is part of an identification of masculine fulfilment with self-denial. It connects up with how men are brought up to think and feel about ‘work’ within a Protestant culture. Work has always been a way of proving a man’s individual worth and achievement. It has been a question of ‘getting on’ and ‘making it’ in the world.
