ABSTRACT

Kent provides a case study of an area under intense transport and physical development pressure. The south-east of England is the most congested region of the UK and, as the previous two case studies have shown, local levels of congestion are likely to influence how transport issues are conceived and approached by transport professionals and politicians. Comparisons between Lancashire and Kent will also be particularly interesting given the similar settlement structure of the two counties. Both areas are characterized by a number of small towns with rural hinterlands, yet influenced by the presence of a nearby major conurbation.
