ABSTRACT

The question is: at what densities can we (and should we) reconstruct our cities to help meet the challenge of the 3.8 million new households, projected to form in England between 1996 and 2021? This chapter will avoid the question of numbers, debated endlessly both before publication of the Urban Task Force report (Urban Task Force 1999), and since. But the question of urban density is very relevant to the final answer, and is the central point of this contribution.
