ABSTRACT
The dwelling that seemed particularly English to foreign contemporaries was the terraced house in which the huge majority of people made their homes in 1914. From time immemorial it had been used wherever street frontage was valuable, as in countless towns and villages, and it took fresh inspiration from the formal urban terrace, imported to London from Italy in the 1630s, which became the universal mode of urban house development for the next three centuries.
