ABSTRACT
As long as Mexico and the United States exist, a political geographical division between the two neighboring countries is inevitable. What is not given is the nature and location of that division. For that reason, we must look to history to begin to understand the process by which the U.S.–Mexico boundary, which to many seems an immutable fact of life, has come to be.
