ALIEN [tourist industry] In 2000, there were nearly 700 million tourists exploring the globe and in 2020 there will be around 1.6 billion. By some measures tourism is the world's largest industry, accounting for 11% of global GDP and a similar proportion of world employment. 1 [hotels] From 1980 to 2000 the world's hotel capacity doubled to 29,34 million beds. 2 [tourism destinations] France 75.5 million, United States 50.9 million, Spain 48.2 million, Italy 41.2 million and China 31.2 million. 3
