ABSTRACT

This text is about the eventual transformation of that loose collection of towns and cities known as the Randstad into an interconnected urban constellation to be called ‘Deltametropolis’ – ‘Delta’ deriving from the natural system it is part and parcel of, and ‘metropolis’ referring to the cultural system of world cities in which it might partake, the global network in which these metropolises are the focal points of human interaction. It is not certain that this will happen. It may happen. This text is about what it may take to let this happen. Questions that arise, then, are how a metropolis is conceived, how society can become pregnant with this idea and how this idea may grow and materialize in the outside world.
