ABSTRACT

I was a young, recently graduated counselor with top-notch clinical training and supervision, having participated in more than 1,000 hours of group work. I viewed myself as well prepared, possessing the skills to help solve the myriad set of problems facing college students. I was aware that many of the problems confronting students in the late 1960s, particularly freshmen, involved being away from home for the first time, adjusting to college and roommates, finding friends, developing study habits, managing time, establishing relationships, and interacting with a drug culture. So the job didn’t seem that difficult or complicated, until I met Stephen.
