ABSTRACT

In recent years China has been widely viewed as the next superpower, and how to cope with China has become a major issue for foreign policy makers around the world. The aim of this concluding chapter is to address this important and timely issue. It starts with a review of China’s rapid international ascent in the reform era, especially after the successful Beijing Olympic Games and in the wake of the financial storm in 2008. Then it will give an overview of the debate on how to cope with China, especially among US scholars, commentators and policy makers. The last part of the chapter is a discussion on the basis of the findings of this study on how to best understand China’s external behavior.
