ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explain the essentials of the college search and application process. Students actively engage the terminology of higher education: liberal arts colleges, universities, specialized institutes, community colleges, and the meaning of majors and minors. The authors also explore relevant factors in college selection such as size, location, on-campus life, and commuting. Liberal arts colleges are primarily colleges with an emphasis on undergraduate study in the liberal arts. Institutes specializing in technology and art and design also offer 4-year programs leading to a college degree. Community colleges and/or junior colleges are educational institutions that provide 2 years of academic instruction beyond secondary school as well as technical and vocational training to prepare graduates for careers. Summer programs can provide opportunities for enrichment. Many colleges, museums, local municipalities, and private groups offer programs for enrichment in the arts, science, computers, and filmmaking among others.
