ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role that college partnerships should have in the development of a successful program and how counselors can develop these relationships to further foster the impact of this curriculum on student success. It describes the development of a professional partnership between an urban 6-12 school and a School of Education at a local college with a particular emphasis on the ability of each partner to provide meaningful input into developing plans. The chapter aims to convince counselors of the valuable rationale for fostering partnerships with colleges, of the value of these partnerships for students, and of the emerging importance of themselves as the major leaders in these partnerships. Faculty from Manhattan College's School of Education continue to seek placements for their preservice teachers and counselors-in-training at the school, not only because the School of Education is committed to urban education but also because of the atmosphere that has been sustained by the partnership, a community of learners.
