ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors first present recent work on career development theories including Social Cognitive Career Theory, which suggests that career choice is influenced by outcome expectancies, career interests, and career self-efficacy. Students will use exercises to help them clarify their interests, discover actual work descriptions, and understand the necessary educational requirements for specific careers. Most importantly, the authors emphasize the importance of students maintaining an open mind to the career possibilities that lie ahead of them. Super theorized that high school students are in the career exploration stage of career development. Some helpful resources are the College Board’s My College QuickStart and MyRoad, the ACT’s Educational Planning and Assessment System, and Naviance. Understanding the people strengths and weaknesses is essential in exploring career possibilities. It’s never too early to research what major and educational background is necessary for a particular career.
