ABSTRACT

In the past twenty years, Argentine director Rodrigo García (b. 1964) has become one of the few Hispanic theatre practitioners to gain an international reputation within the festival circuit. He and his company, La Carnicería Teatro (The Butcher’s Theatre), are commissioned by prominent institutions; his texts are translated and staged across the globe. Alongside names such as Socìetas Rafaello Sanzio, Jan Lauwers/Needcompany, Jan Fabre and Guy Cassiers, García’s raw and vibrant performance style has become a valuable currency in the international festival circuit, where he is perceived as a radical, innovative and influential auteur. The present chapter proposes an approach to his work in the context of contemporary directors’ theatre in Europe.
