ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a number of strategies or guidelines, which are intended to assist the teacher to emphasize the use of academic language in the class-room. When the use of academic language is facilitated in the classroom it also enhances the acquisition of content-area skills. Here we break down the concept of academic language into actual teaching behaviors, and we finish the chapter by providing an observational checklist for the behaviors which can be a very useful tool in teacher peer coaching. For a view of teachers demonstrating the strategies/behaviors presented in this chapter, please visit the Project CALLI Web site (https://www.csub.edu/calli/).
