ABSTRACT

Industries, organisations, communities and consumers impact upon the environment in various ways and all have a shared responsibility for ensuring the integrity of the earth’s environment for current and future generations. With regard to construction projects, environmental concerns often focus upon aspects such as air emissions (e.g. dust), waste disposal, noise pollution and water discharge. The ISO 14001:2004 standard is an international standard for developing,

supporting and auditing environmental management systems within all types of organisations. This chapter introduces environmental management systems and outlines the requirements placed upon an organisation by ISO 14001:2004.
