ABSTRACT

A discography printed in book form will most certainly be out of date by the time it is published. For the most up-to-date list, the logical source to consult is the Intern et site, “Arkiv.com: the Source for Cla ssical Mus ic. ” Typing in Barber will result in a c omplete list of available recordings (c. 488 as of the beginn ing of 2009), whic h can be sorted by title, genre, or perfor mer. Other source s include: Amazon. com, Berkshi re Record Outl et, and H&B Direct. The G. Schir mer website also includes a discography conta ining some of the most recent and historically acclaimed recordings of Barber works. Therefore, the following list is designated “historical discography,” that is, a list of recordings, originally issued on either 78 or 3313 rpm, many of which have been reissued in CD format. They are often the first recordings of a given work, produced shortly after the piece was composed and frequently recorded by the performer(s) who gave the premiere.
