ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how the consideration of time contributes to our understanding of informal care across the lifecourse. We start by discussing the importance of different conceptualisations of time to caring and then explore how considerations of time are bound up with social processes and social control. Care over the lifecourse is then explored in terms of the role of memories and anticipations of care in structuring our journey and the importance of gendered expectations and practices. The chapter moves on to consider the ways in which people cope with expected and unexpected change and, last, examines the shifting nature of care between the generations.
