ABSTRACT

P eople in transitional communities of belonging such as schools, camps, and human service settings experience ongoing grief due to the regular turn-over in staff or other participants. Chronic turnover disrupts or ends relationships, making people reluctant to invest in getting to know new colleagues or clients, even where this is vital to the work or residential setting. Knowing that recurrent loss is structurally inevitable to the eld can mitigate but not eliminate people’s grief and hurt. Alongside the hurt, however, grief can become meaningful with the right supports and rituals.
