ABSTRACT

In the first part of this book, Green’s views on education were explored. As we shall see in the course of what follows, Green also attempted to devise a plan for a national system which accorded with his philosophical principles. His range of educational interests extended over all stages: elementary, secondary, university and adult. To place Green’s thinking on education in an appropriate context, it will be first necessary to sketch in the situation prevailing in schools and universities in England in the 1860s.1
