ABSTRACT

The Baltic Sea Region (BSR) involves countries from four geographic parts of Europe (Northern, Central, Western and Eastern): Germany (Western Europe), three Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden and Finland), the Baltic States, Poland (Central Europe), and the Russian Federation (which covers a huge part of Eastern Europe) (see Map 7.1). In terms of security orientation, the BSR reflects diversity: there are members of NATO and the EU, neutral states with a long history of military non-alignment, and there is Russia which has a special relationship with the Euro-Atlantic structures.
