ABSTRACT

Before children start using areas of the classroom independently, I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that establishing class rules and behaviour expectations is key. None of what you are trying to achieve will be successful without the basis of solid learning routines. The challenge I always face is building up children’s respect for the classroom long-term. No matter how much lecturing I do during the first few days of term about putting things back where they belong and taking care of books, etc., it doesn’t take long before the majority of the class forget to keep caring.
