ABSTRACT

Alongside the supreme joys of a career making and teaching music are the struggles that new teachers experience, which often include learning how to manage the music budget and other administrative duties, student discipline issues, and balancing career and home life. Other challenges may include learning to adapt classes to students with special needs, to communicate with parents, to fund-raise, to advocate for the music program, and to arrange music for the available instrumentation or voices (Vartanian 2003). It is important that the student begins to think about the realities of and solutions to inevitable challenges.
