So runs a little hymn to gluttony.We praise bringers of good and beautiful things, and pray for them. Praise and prayer are basic human attitudes and activities.
The Ancient Greek poet Sappho wrote moving lines about ‘the most beautiful thing’ in the world. In my version:
Some say the sight they find loveliest on earth is an army of horsemen, some say a troop of foot-soldiers, others a fleet of ships – I say it’s the one you love.
