ABSTRACT

There are numerous other philosophers who have helped sharpen the critical edge of existential thinking and who make stimulating reading for existential therapists. What follows is a small selection of those ideas that are most well known and relevant. Of course it is not possible to do justice to the whole array of phenomenological, existentialist, post-modern, structuralist, poststructuralist and deconstructionist thinking. There are some other authors I have chosen to leave out, such as Habermas, Adorno, Gadamer, Marcuse, Althusser, Deleuze, Guattari, Barthes, Lyotard and Baudrillard, though each has made an important contribution to existential literature and deserves to be read by existential therapists (see Loewenthal and Snell 2003). The list is long and this particular selection is by no means authoritative or final. It will undoubtedly change in the coming years and with future editions of this text.
