ABSTRACT

Before entering upon the rather painful matters which this meeting is called to consider, there is one very pleasant topic with which I should wish to begin. It is the expression of deep gratitude to our Chairman1 on the part of all who are concerned in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. What he has done in Manchester and the neighbourhood is, no doubt, known to all of you at least as well as to me. His work on the nuclear problem in general has been valuable in many ways, but more particularly through the obvious sanity of all that he had to say. I had the privilege of being closely associated with his work in connection with the Motion that he introduced in the House of Lords. I was impressed alike by his energy and his skill. We are indeed fortunate to have him with us in our difficult campaign.
