ABSTRACT
About halfway between Barnsley and Wombwell was one of those retail parks you see everywhere: a big Tesco, next to it a DIY store, a carpet retailer and so on. As Claire and I drove past there on our way back from town one day, she remarked that she’d been in all those shops to ask if they had any part-time jobs, without success. She’d also been to the big Meadowhall shopping centre near Sheffield with similar results.
