ABSTRACT

These women made their marks in male environments-not just which men dominate but which male managers populate exclusively. Susan Ivey spent her 27-year career in tobacco, rising to become CEO of the industry’s second largest producer, Reynolds America. Paula Reynolds rose through the ranks of the utility industry, before becoming CEO at Safeco (insurance and the Fortune 500). Patricia Woertz spent 29 years in oil and gas (Gulf Oil, Chevron, then Chevron-Texaco), before the Archer Daniels Midland board of directors appointed her CEO of the agribusiness giant, “supermarket to the world.”
