ABSTRACT

Expectations have been that while we do not expect parity, by this time we would have more persons of color and women as CEOs. One of the reasons reality lags behind the expectations is the highly scripted way in which large public corporations choose CEOs. This market limits access to those who, by and large, meet certain socially defined rather than skills-based or performance-based criteria. Because the system of CEO selection perpetuates itself, the system remains closed to other than late-middle-age white males.
