Carleton Fiorina is the most celebrated, and controversial, woman CEO of our times. She came to Hewlett-Packard, number 19 on the Fortune 500 list, as the highest ranking female CEO ever. The media heralded her July 1999 accession as an explosive smash through the glass ceiling.4 Fortune pegged her as the most powerful woman in business for five years running. The HP board removed her from office on February 8, 2005. Only two directors remained in the room to inform her of what the board had done.
