ABSTRACT
Our analysis shows that regional and cross-country comparisons reveal basic and fundamental divisions in production and growth of knowledge. We identify six broad patterns that distinguish countries and regions as follows:
• Pattern of R&D and wealth creation: R&D spending is highly correlated with the wealth of nations; we see that the highest spending is found within the OECD countries although a number of Asian countries are beginning to spend substantial amounts on R&D.
