ABSTRACT

The demilitarisation of societies during conflict transformation is associated with the decommissioning of weapons. However, addressing the legacies of political violence also requires transitions in masculinities. Men need to move away from violent modes of conflict resolution towards non-violent methods of resolving ethno-nationalist disputes. The Northern Ireland case study highlights how men’s transition from warrior to peacebuilder identities can impact negatively on democratic gender relations at local levels. The case study of Northern Ireland reinforces the importance of addressing gender inequalities in local level peacebuilding initiatives.
