ABSTRACT

In the fall of 2003, I taught a graduate seminar for teachers on the topic of in-school and out-of-school learning. The purposes of the class were to raise teachers’ awareness of the knowledge that culturally and linguistically different children might bring from home, and to show them how this knowledge could be used to support learning at school. In the process, we had many questions. Why is it that culturally different children are many times uninterested or bored in school? What can schools, and especially teachers, do to make school learning and classroom activities more relevant and interesting to all children?
