One of the first jobs with which the carpenter is concerned when on site is the setting out, erection and striking of formwork to foundations. In setting up formwork for foundations various types are commonly met. In firm ground, the concrete may be filled to the width of the trench and no formwork is needed. The formwork for the pile caps will be similar to that for pad foundations; while that for the beams will be identical to strip foundation forms. A device imbedded in the previously cast concrete to carry a subsequent load from formwork containing the fresh concrete. The formwork used to cast a kicker or upstand to the base of a wall or column. A major vertical member in a formwork system, usually outside the form and giving support to one or more forms through studs or walings.
