ABSTRACT
The purpose of partitions is considered as being to divide a particular storey into separate rooms within the same occupancy. This chapter is provides to those partitions in which timber is the main structural element. A number of different types of non-load bearing partitions are available involving the partial or full use of proprietary materials. Most of the lining or sheeting used to cover partitions consists of some type of vegetable fibre, having the common characteristic that it is hygroscopic and swells and shrinks with changes in moisture content. The door frame is also isolated from the partition with intermediate layers of insulation board while the short studs over the door are reduced and separated. The doors in sound-resisting partitions should have the joint to the floor on their bottom edges closed with a rubber strip ploughed in and making firm contact with a threshold when closed.
