ABSTRACT

The word ‘opinion’ comes from old Latin words meaning ‘to think, judge, suppose and choose’. To have an opinion is to make a judgement or hold a belief based on something less than proof – and proof comes from Latin too, from words that mean ‘to test and approve’ and ‘that which is good and honest’. Perhaps we can say then that the best/strongest/most useful facts are those that have been tested and proved?
