ABSTRACT

Observing what is happening around us is something we do all the time in our dayto-day lives. However, when we are carrying out observations in the classroom we need to be careful and considered. There is an art to observing. In carrying out observations we need to ensure that the observations are:

• fit for purpose, that is, focused on the aim of the observation; • detailed and accurate, that is, we try to record exactly what has happened; • free from assumptions and biases, that is, we record what we see, not what we

think has happened.
