ABSTRACT

The structure of the session helps keep parents on track, which is absolutely necessary to keep the session productive and the group leader in charge. The sequence of homework review, then Parent Handout, then homework assignments is pretty straightforward, and parents will catch onto the routine quickly. For parents who missed the previous session, it is important to avoid giving “extra time” during the group, or assigning a special phone call to someone missing a session, as this is unfair to those who attend regularly. This special treatment also gives the message that it is not important to attend regularly. Similarly, if a spouse “filled in” during the previous session, do not count on the spouse conveying enough of the session content to be sufficient to completing the assignments. Instead, give the handout of the missed session to the returning parent and use the homework review with other parents as a way of informing them of what they missed.
