ABSTRACT

Introduction Cultural tourism covers a broad variety of cultural activities from high cultural activities such as the arts to more everyday and even mundane and familiar populist activities through to the advent of so-called creative tourism activities and events. Covering all of these activities may need a whole book by itself; instead we focus in this chapter on just a few pertinent examples of twenty-first-century cultural tourism in India. The Indian government has recently begun to invest in cultural tourism attractions and events such as the Commonwealth Games, due to be held in Delhi in October 2010, to draw in more international visitors in particular (see also Chapters 6 and 8 in particular).
