ABSTRACT
THIS SCENARIO IS A COMMON ONE AND COULD REPRESENT MANY ruraltowns in the United States. Many social workers are interested primarily in working with individuals, but as this situation brings to light, many individual problems are the result of or are aggravated by larger social problems. If a social worker were to intervene with an individual or family from this small town, she or he would quickly find that skills in macro assessment and intervention would be necessary.
