ABSTRACT

MIDDLE CHILDHOOD IS A TIME OF CONTINUED BIOPSYCHOSOCIALdevelopment and, as such, can be characterized by problems and worries for parents. In the case scenario, we see Sue struggling with issues in many areas, and naturally, her parents are worried that she will be “left behind” in her physical, emotional, and social development. In this chapter, we explore some developmental milestones that occur in middle childhood as well as common issues surrounding education, family, the media, and peer relations that social workers face when working with children in this age range and their families.
