Creating opportunities for wordplay As with metaphors, onomatopoeia, assonance and alliteration are often taught as

items on the figures of speech checklist. Above and beyond their grammatical

qualities these and others offer a wonderful opportunity for wordplay, which I think

is an essential aspect of developing pupils’ linguistic competence and which is

congruent with the core aim of this book in helping young writers to be unafraid

of ideas.
