ABSTRACT

Variations on basic narratives Vladimir Propp’s work uncovered a great range of variations to the basic narrative

elements (a simplified list of some of the more common ones appears in Figure 13).

For our purposes they are useful in several ways:

Sub-elements create specific relationships between the basic elements of the

story. So for instance if misfortune or lack appears this may involve the hero or villain with a partner who may be a source of help. Alternatively, one character’s

‘lack’ can give another character an advantage and so on.
