ABSTRACT
Fiction is usefully defined as making the possible seem probable. Most if not all SF
(never called ‘sci-fi’ by aficionados!) explores possible answers to the question what if. As such it is essentially speculative, though SF stories range along a continuum of speculation from the wildly unlikely to the almost certainly inevitable.
