ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we will look at three theories of how we gain knowledge of the external world through perception: direct realism, representative realism and idealism. We will look at the strengths and weaknesses of each. By the end of the chapter, you should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the three theories, and be able to analyse and evaluate several arguments for and against each one.
