ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a brief comparative history of Western media systems. It illustrates how different histories and political, economic, social, cultural and religious as well as geographic factors help to explain the different characteristics of media systems. It begins by focusing on the historical evolution of systems of mass media and the patterns of development across Western systems. Here, it describes the relationship of media and political systems and the development of the mass media of newspapers and broadcasting.
