ABSTRACT
This book examines the role of social participation in the architectural process
with the objective of widening engagement between architects and society.
While coming from an academic base, it is directed to architectural practices,
relevant professional and other policy institutions as well as academics (in
teaching and research). It covers a wide scope of historical, geographical, con-
temporary and conceptual contexts, including other relevant areas of practice
and knowledge. It seeks to assist in transformation and ends with a series of
recommendations which have been discussed in various venues as well as
contemporary contextual review. As such, the editors hope the book will con-
tribute to the evolution of architecture as a discipline, profession and practice
within a wider debate on architecture and society.
