ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some international experiences in wider social participa-

tion in the architectural process, with the main intent to, first, illustrate import-

ant parallels to the UK experience in the global North (mainly in the US), and

second, to illustrate some alternatives to this experience in countries in the

South (Brazil and South Africa).1 The objective is not to be comprehensive in

describing international experience but to highlight the relevance of some of

the key concepts and issues identified in Chapter 1. To this end the three inter-

national ‘snapshots’ of experience in this chapter focus on some different

aspects of wider social participation in the architectural process: institutions in

North America and typologies (housing in Brazil and community buildings in

South Africa).
